The Nurse Practitioners' Association of Ontario (NPAO) was founded in 1973 and became an expert group of the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario in 1985. NPAO is very proud to be selected as the Interest Group of the Year for three consecutive years - 2009, 2008 and 2007.
NPAO was founded to represent nurse practitioners in primary health care. The organization mandate was expanded in 1998 to include support for NPs in all levels of health care; primary, secondary and tertiary. Membership currently includes primary health care, adult and paediatric NPs, students in NP education programs and nurses who are interested in the role. You do not have to be an NP to be a member!
The Association lobbies on behalf of nurse practitioners and on critical health care issues that affect the well-being of individuals, families and communities. NPAO maintains a strong commitment to the profession of nursing in Ontario. On our website you can find position statements on NP Referrals to Specialists and Team Based Bonuses as well as recent submissions to the Minister of Health and Long Term Care regarding HPRAC referrals on RN(EC)s.
NPAO provides its members with professional support and educational opportunities. In 2008, NPAO organized education programs available to members across the province who were preparing for the new adult and paediatric examinations. Check the link below for information on this program and watch our website home page for information about programs in 2010.
NPAO is served by a voluntary Board elected by the membership. NPAO jointly sponsors with RNAO an annual conference, maintains a website. Members are informed through regular e-newsletters (News You Can Use), FYI Memos on key issues and Action Requests. Our mission, vision, goals and strategic plan are posted on the website.
If you are already an RNAO member and wish to add NPAO to your membership, please contact RNAO at 1-800-268-7199 (toll-free) or 416-599-1925.
