Action Alert: Urge Premier to act now on a poverty reduction strategy for Ontario
The burden of ill health and early death associated with poverty is undeniable. As nurses, we witness the devastating effects of poverty in our day to day work.
In his November 2007 throne speech, Premier McGuinty committed to striking a cabinet committee on poverty reduction, which is composed of fifteen MPPs from across the province and with varying portfolios. This committee, led by Minister Deb Matthews, will work to develop poverty indicators and targets, and a strategy for reducing poverty in Ontario.
Nurses know the impact poverty can have on people’s health. That’s why RNAO has joined with many other organizations to form the 25 in 5 Network for Poverty Reduction, which is calling on the government to adopt the “25-in-5” strategy as an essential step to improve thousands of lives.
