RNAO nurse advises on elder abuse and neglect
RNAO’s own Josie Santos, a registered nurse and the lead manager for RNAO’s work on the prevention of elder abuse, will appear before the federal Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights on October 16, to offer the association’s views on preventing elder abuse and neglect.
The Committee is considering adding a provision to the Criminal Code and is seeking to hear from qualified individuals, such as Santos, about this potential addition. If the Bill-36 is passed, the criminal code will be amended to show that “vulnerability due to age” would be a factor for judges to consider when sentencing individuals guilty of committing abuse against seniors.
RNAO has long-worked on the prevention of elder abuse and neglect. Many instances of elder abuse go unreported so RNAO wants to see greater emphasis on the root causes of elder abuse such as poverty along with more programs on prevention and intervention and better support services for seniors and their families and caregivers.
