Action Alert: Act NOW For Affordable Housing
Urgent Action Alert to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Bloc Québécois Leader Gilles Duceppe: Act Now for Affordable Housing!
Tuesday, October 19, 2010, is the National Day of Action with rallies being organized across the country to draw attention to the ‘national emergency’ of homelessness and the hundreds of thousands of Canadians who lack an adequate and affordable place to sleep at night.
Nurses know that safe, affordable housing is essential to good health. People who are homeless are sicker and have higher death rates than the general population. That’s why the RNAO is calling on all Members of Parliament to support Bill C-304, a private members' bill introduced by NDP MP Libby Davies that would establish a long-overdue national housing strategy. See the RNAO press release at: http://rnao.ca/news/media-releases/Media-release-Ontario-nurses-call-for-action-on-national-housing-strategy
Both Liberal and New Democratic Party MPs have committed to support Bill C-304, but they alone do not have the votes to pass the Bill when it comes to a vote later this Fall. If Canada is to develop a national housing strategy, like all other G-8 countries, either or both of Stephen Harper’s Conservatives and Gilles Duceppe’s Bloc Québécois must support Bill C-304. To date, this has not happened. This is why we need YOUR action.
In an open letter addressed to both Prime Minister Harper and Gilles Duceppe, the RNAO explained why it is so crucial that all political parties join together to address the national emergency of homelessness and inadequate affordable housing. You can read the letter here.
Figures by the Wellesley Institute, a housing think tank, reveal up to 300,000 Canadians are homeless. Another three million households live in unaffordable housing while a further three million households live in housing described as substandard. These statistics are simply unacceptable for a country that is as wealthy as Canada is. It’s time for action!
What You Can Do TODAY
Please tell Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Bloc Québécois Leader Gilles Duceppe that it’s time to step up and vote for secure, adequate, accessible and affordable housing. By working together, in collaboration, MPs from all Parties can make needed progress in addressing the national emergency of homelessness. You too can make a real difference. Act today!
Tell your friends, family and colleagues to join in the action alert.
