Free, community screening of Sicko at the Revue Cinema will feature guest speaker from the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario
TORONTO – October 12, 2007 – Ontario nurses will remind Torontonians of the importance of protecting and enhancing our universal Medicare system at a free, community screening of the documentary Sicko being hosted by Peggy Nash, MP for Parkdale-High Park, on Monday, October 15. Following the screening, Doris Grinspun, Executive Director of the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO), will comment on the themes addressed in the film and will answer questions from the audience.
Sicko, a documentary by American filmmaker Michael Moore, looks at the millions of Americans who have trouble accessing health care in the U.S. and contrasts the American health-care system with Canada’s publicly-funded system. RNAO endorses the film because it sends a strong message that health care should be a human right and not a commodity.
“Tommy Douglas established a universal, health-care system that is cherished by Canadians. While the weight of evidence and research proves that our Medicare system offers a higher quality of care, and at a much lower cost to tax payers, than the U.S. model, Sicko uses the stories of real patients to effectively drive the point home,” says Doris Grinspun, RNAO’s Executive Director.
This summer, when Alliance Atlantis, Sicko’s distributor, offered Canadian nurses and other health-care professionals free admission to the film, RNAO encouraged its 26,000 members to take advantage of the promotion. RNAO followed-up with an initiative of its own and asked registered nurses to invite provincial and federal politicians to see Sicko with them. Peggy Nash took the idea one step further and decided to hold a free, community screening of the film.
