Tilda Shalof is a patient advocate, a nurse leader, a public speaker, a media commentator and the author of six books about her experiences over 28 years as both a nurse and a patient.
Three years ago Tilda's fifth book, Opening My Heart: A Journey from Nurse to Patient and Back Again, chronicled her own journey as a patient undergoing open-heart surgery, from diagnosis with all its fears and concerns, to the operating room, intensive care unit, cardiac ward, recovery at home, rehabilitation and finally her return to work.
She says that she learned more from her one-week stay as a hospital patient than in all of her years caring for the critically ill. With a mix of warmth and humour,
Tilda will advise us, and for those close to us whom we may be representing, how to be informed and effective patients.
Burlington's Different Drummer Books will provide a selection of Tilda's books for sale and Tilda will be happy to sign any and all. Tilda's latest book, Bringing It Home: A Nurse Discovers Healthcare Beyond the Hospital, will be published this April.
Reservations for the dinner can be made by email, telephone (905-827-6302), or by mail (cheques payable to The Canadian Club of Halton Peel, 283 River Side Drive, Oakville, L6K 3N3).
