Interest Group of the Year - Rainbow Nursing Interest Group (RNIG)

This award honours an interest group that demonstrates teamwork and leadership, influences decision-makers and involves members in RNAO initiatives.

There’s no stopping the Rainbow Nursing Interest Group (RNIG). Since its inception six years ago, RNIG has worked tirelessly to advance lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) inclusivity in education, research and the workplace.

Recently, the group committed to working with RNAO and Rainbow Health Ontario to develop a proposal for funding a best practice guideline for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer client care and workplace health.

Representatives were present at Queen’s Park last spring when Bill 33, Toby’s Act, which recognizes the right to be free from discrimination and harassment because of gender identity or gender expression, was passed. Members’ advocacy also led to RNAO’s partnership with the Ontario Gay-Straight Alliance, helping to pass the Accepting Schools Act, which sanctions school boards to get tough on bullying. “To the nurses who support us: thank you,” says Co-Chair Leanne Powell. “I find it very exciting how far we’re moving ahead.”
