Joanne Laucius, Ottawa Citizen
“The other side of 18”
Joanne Laucius graduated from the Carleton University School of Journalism in 1987 with a specialty in science reporting. She has been writing for the Ottawa Citizen since 1989, where she currently works as a producer for the newspaper’s new multi-media tablet edition. Joanne has covered a range of beats, including education, science, social trends and health. Reporting on the latter is important, she says, because it helps readers make decisions about the most precious thing they have: their well-being. Her winning entry, The other side of 18, explores the difficulty teens with chronic conditions experience when moving from the pediatric health system into the adult system. It’s a subject that does not attract much attention, and Joanne hopes the article helps young patients and their parents/caregivers navigate through this transition.
